Unlike many jewelers, we do all of our gold and silver casting in-house instead of outsourcing this part of production. The only thing we don’t cast in-house are our platinum pieces.  So, what exactly is casting in jewelry? In simple terms, casting is the process of creating a metal object by pouring molten metal into a mold, and allowing it to cool and solidify. Often called “lost wax casting,” this is an ancient technique that still persists today. It's like pouring liquid magic into a shape and watching it transform into something tangible and beautiful. Here's how it works: Step 1: Crafting the Mold First, we start with a wax model of your exact ring, whether it's hand-carved in wax or digitally created and 3D printed. We then make a mold around the wax ring, using a plaster-like material called a “casting investment.” Think of the mold as a negative impression of the final piece.This mold then goes into a burnout kiln, melting out the wax to leave a cavity where the ring used to be.    Step 2: Preparing the Metal Next comes the exciting part – melting the metal! Our metalsmiths first weigh out the exact amount of metal needed for each ring/mold. We use ethically sourced metals like Fairmined gold and silver, depending on the design and customer preferences. Once melted, the metal reaches its molten state, ready to be poured into the mold.   Step 3: Casting Once the wax has burned out of the mold and the metal is heated with a torch until liquified, it's time to bring the elements together. The liquid metal is poured carefully into the mold, filling every nook and cranny of the design. This requires precision and skill to ensure the metal flows smoothly and evenly.   Step 4: Cooling and Finishing After the metal is poured, the mold is quenched (dunked) into a bucket of water. The plaster investment is so hot that it actually boil, causing the mold to disintegrate and helping to remove the metal ring. But we're not done yet! The piece undergoes further refining and finishing touches to achieve the desired look – whether it's polishing, setting stones, or adding texture.   Why do we love casting? Casting allows us to create intricate and detailed designs that would be nearly impossible to achieve by other means. It's a versatile process that gives us the freedom to explore endless creative possibilities, from delicate filigree to bold statement pieces. In this idealized scenario, choosing recycled gold would alleviate the environmental impact of new mining by circumventing the entire system. However, the reality might surprise you. The majority of gold labeled as "recycled" has actually never reached a consumer at all. Instead, it is often newly-mined gold that has never left the pre-consumer supply chain. What does this mean? Essentially, it's not the recycled gold you might picture from your old, broken necklaces, dated rings, or retired electronics. Rather, it's gold that never made it into a finished product and often hasn’t ever reached the consumer market. This distinction is crucial as it challenges the assumption that choosing recycled gold is a straightforward way to reduce the environmental impact related to mining.  The Rebranding Game: So, where does this pre-consumer recycled gold come from? Unfortunately, it's often newly mined gold that undergoes a process of rebranding throughout the supply chain. For example, a refiner might buy newly mined gold from various sources, smelt the gold together again, and resell the gold as “recycled.” This means that the gold labeled as "recycled" might not be any different from conventionally mined gold, and layers of redefinition obscure its journey from mine to market. By buying gold labeled as “recycled,” jewelry wearers are supporting conventional mining, which is well known to cause both environmental and social harm.  This lack of transparency raises concerns about the true origins of the gold in your jewelry. Without a clear understanding of the supply chain, it becomes challenging for jewelry lovers to make informed decisions about the ethical and environmental impact of their purchases. This means that even unknowingly, sustainably-minded jewelry businesses and wearers who buy recycled gold may be supporting harmful and toxic practices typical of much conventional gold mining.      A Call for Transparency: In an industry that is gradually awakening to the importance of ethical sourcing, transparency is key. As consumers and business owners, we have the right to know where our jewelry comes from and the impact it has on people and the planet. The current practice of rebranding newly mined gold as "recycled" falls short of this expectation.  Recycling gold is actually nothing new, as nobody discards gold due to its high value, so it is totally different from materials like aluminum and paper that if not recycled would be discarded It is therefore highly misleading to advertise “recycled gold” as any kind of higher environmental or social standard for jewelry. Buying “recycled gold” with an untraceable origin is in fact quite unethical as it does not bring progress and development to a mining sector that will not disappear and needs the support of the market to foster sustainability and environmental responsibility. In most cases, labeling gold jewelry as made from “recycled gold” is actually greenwashing, and is simply a lie.  Choosing Responsible Gold Alternatives: So, what can we do to support ethical gold mining and make a positive impact through our jewelry choices? The answer lies in supporting responsible, transparent sources that directly benefit mining communities. One such initiative that stands out is Fairmined certified gold. Fairmined certification guarantees that the gold has been responsibly mined, providing fair wages to workers and adhering to environmentally sustainable practices. If a jeweler is averse to answering questions about the origins of their metal beyond the refiner level, then you can’t be confident that the gold in your jewelry was mined ethically or responsibly. It is important to remember that most gold labeled as “recycled” is not actually coming from these heirloom jewelry pieces, but rather from unknown sources (often newly mined gold that has never reached a consumer).      The Big Takeaways about Recycled Gold Jewelry In conclusion, the term "recycled gold" usually isn't really what it seems. Beyond its role as a quality standard, the Fairmined program uplifts the lives of small-scale miners and promotes positive transformation in the jewelry industry. The mine's journey commenced in 2007 when construction and assembly work began. After several years of dedication, Mina Chede finally received its Environmental License in 2011, which marked the beginning of gold extraction in this region. The El Tambo region is unique, being home to a vibrant community where roughly half of the population is engaged in mining, while the other half finds their livelihoods in agriculture, particularly in coffee, agave, sugar cane, and pine cultivation. Approximately 100 people depend on Mina Chede for their livelihoods, reflecting its significance to the local community. Moreover, the organization has consistently promoted the education and well-being of its workers, reflecting its commitment to holistic growth.     The Path to Fairmined Certification: A Commitment to Sustainability The journey towards Fairmined certification was an enriching and transformative one for Mina Chede, lasting approximately six months. One of the primary challenges faced by the organization was navigating the changes to their commercialization model. As Anny Jaramillo, Planning Director at Mina Chede, shares, "We decided to get this certification because we firmly believe that only an activity that takes into account all its surroundings (social, environmental, financial) deserves to be called mining. Nevertheless, what we are doing now could become mandatory in the future. For this reason, we want to tell all the miners who wish to follow this path: make it your decision today, don't wait for it to be an obligation tomorrow." Achievements Thanks to Fairmined Certification: -The Only Certified Organization in Cauca: Mina Chede proudly stands as the only certified mining organization in the Cauca department, contributing to the creation of a conflict-free supply chain in the region. -Workers and Community's Welfare: Mina Chede has made significant investments in the well-being of its workforce. Initiatives include the construction of an occupational health and safety office, training in stress management, personal growth, and gender violence awareness, and support for the youth cultural group of the Tambo Technological Institute. -Best Mining Practices: Mina Chede continually strives for excellence through geotechnical stability analysis, the implementation of flotation cells to improve mineral processing, and the use of a mini loader for cleaning sedimentation tanks. -Environmental Responsibility: The organization actively participates in environmental preservation through landscape beautification and responsible handling of chemical substances to reduce environmental impacts. Process optimization in the mineral processing plant has led to reduced water and chemical substance consumption. -Labour Conditions: Mina Chede ensures the well-being of its workforce through the formation of the occupational health and safety committee (COPASST), which holds monthly meetings. All workers have employment contracts, and there is a zero-tolerance policy for forced labor, discrimination, or child labor. -Traceability: The organization prioritizes traceability, ensuring that certified minerals are traceable from the moment they leave the mine to the point of sale. -Support for the Community: Thanks to the Fairmined premium, Mina Chede invests in community development, supporting the municipality's youth dance group and addressing issues such as adolescent pregnancy and drug abuse in various townships in the region.      Challenges Faced at Mina Chede It hasn’t been easy for Mina Chede to achieve or maintain their Fairmined status, and the mine faces persistent challenges just to maintain operations. The family-owned mine goes above and beyond to not only attain Fairmined certification, but also to prove to local banks that their business is legitimate. Without support from the local or federal government, many banks view mines as risky to support and doesn’t allow the mine to accept foreign currency as a payment for their products. That means that Mina Chede is forced to use third parties to sell their Fairmined metals on the market, and constantly fights to validate their existence despite being the pinnacle of ethically mined gold. Most of all, Mina Chede faces challenges related to security. There are over 50 illegal mine sites within the Mina Chede property that all use mercury, polluting the collective rivers and land. These illegal sites are formed when groups simply walk onto the land and begin mining for themselves using non-certified methods. The mine also faces constant threats from armed forces who threaten to take over the land and operations. Despite these challenges, Mina Chede continues to demonstrate that ethical gold mining is possible - not only by minimizing environmental impact but also providing infrastructure to the community (like funding toilets in schools, for example).  Our In-Person Visit to Mina Chede In late September, 2023, our founder, Will Nevins-Alderfer, joined the Fairmined organization on a group trip to Colombia. There, Will and other jewelers had the opportunity to visit the Chede mine and see the operations firsthand. The trip was extremely impactful as a way to humanize responsible mining efforts and cultivate extra motivation to support Fairmined programs. At W.R. If you’re a sustainably-minded jewelry wearer, you’ve probably heard lots of conversations surrounding ethical sourcing for materials like gold and diamonds. But with all the silver jewelry out there, it seems like there’s a bit of a lack of information about this white metal. Most people (including jewelers) don’t really know where silver is mined, how it is brought to market, or what types of social and environmental factors to consider when sourcing silver. For jewelry-lovers who want to make sustainable purchasing decisions, it is indisputably important to understand how the journey of this metal impacts our planet.  Here, we will explain why it is paramount that the jewelry industry begin using more responsibly sourced silver and improve silver sourcing processes. We’ll touch on why we make our alloys in-house and how we source our metals for W.R. Metalarts pieces. Also, we’ll discuss how we view our role in the industry, and how we make strides to improve the silver market as part of our commitment to ethical sourcing.   First, some terms to know:  Alloy: a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion. Amalgamation: a process of extracting metals (as native gold and silver) from their ores by the addition of small quantities of mercury. Ore: a naturally occurring solid rock-like material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted. Mercury: a metal that is toxic to living organisms and often used to recover minute pieces of gold and silver that are found in soil and sediments.   About Fairmined metals  We can’t dive into the world of responsible silver without touching on Fairmined metals. The Fairmined initiative certifies metals of responsible origin, ensuring that the material is traceable and extracted using environmentally conscious methods. The Fairmined program also supports artisanal and small-scale mining communities by paying a fair price, supporting community development projects, and bringing industry-leading standards to the fore. Fairmined ensures that each purchase supports sustainable development and positive change, making it more than just a choice in jewelry, but a conscious step towards a better future.    Shop Gold For Good: our Fairmined Collections   About the Ethics of Silver  Many people are familiar with the ethics and sustainability concerns surrounding gold and diamonds, but silver deserves just as much attention. Though silver is a very commonly used metal, there are actually very few silver mines out there. Most silver is procured as a byproduct of copper, zinc, lead, and other metal mines. Transforming the silver from its natural ore (rocklike state) to a shiny smooth metal at larger scale facilities often involves the use of toxic chemical additives like borax and cyanide, which are either burned or added to a liquid solution. This means that the process of creating silver produces either toxic vapors, or liquid toxins - both of which require careful disposal.  Like gold, mercury (a toxic chemical) is commonly used to get silver out of ore. Most of the time, mercury use occurs in smaller, more artisanal mine sites. However, most people don’t realize that silver actually requires the use of more mercury than gold during amalgamation. To make matters worse, silver is cheaper and found at 10x the rate of gold, resulting in a tremendous amount of mercury being used to process silver. Since mercury is often not properly disposed of, silver is a huge contributor to mercury toxicity in the environment.   About Our Alloys  Most jewelers don’t make their own gold alloys, and instead outsource this process to others. For us, it’s important to make our own alloys so that we can control exactly what goes into each metal mixture. That way, we can be sure to use metals that were sourced and processed responsibly - resulting in a final alloy (and final jewelry piece) that is ethically sound. Making our own gold alloys also allows us to incorporate more Fairmined silver into our production, which supports the mining community while creating a product that isn’t too much more expensive (compared to using the Fairmined silver alone).  For our alloys we source only 24k Ecological (“Eco”) Fairmined gold, and Fairmined silver that comes from eco gold mines. Eco Fairmined metals have an even higher level of certification which guarantees that no mercury, cyanide, or other toxic chemicals were used in the processing of the metals. Very few mines are Eco Fairmined certified. Fairmined silver is very rare and more expensive, costing 2-7x the price of conventional silver due to the small-scale mining and extra labor needed to process it. Because of our careful sourcing, no mercury is used in the processing of any of our gold or silver. As long as there have been engagement rings folks have searched for the most perfect, most flawless, most stereotypical version of a diamond for them. But recently the industry has seen a shift towards uniqueness and individuality in gemstones. With no way to grade these stones and no two being the same they exist outside of classification and can only be valued by how much YOU love them. These stunning stones were previously passed over and only used for industrial purposes but people looking for something totally unique in their jewelry have rescued them and turned them into pieces that will be cherished for generations. What is a salt and pepper diamond? Salt and pepper diamonds are diamonds that have visible black and white inclusions (visible marks inside the gemstone). These inclusions developed as the diamond crystal was formed deep underground by carbon and other minerals making each stone totally unique.  Can I get matching salt and pepper diamonds? No! That's what makes them so special. Your salt and pepper diamond is one of a kind with a specific chemical structure that formed once and will never be formed exactly the same again. Your salt and pepper diamond could be like a night sky: deep black with flecks of sparkling white, or like a mystical looking glass: stark clear with flecks of black, or anything in between! And because salt and pepper diamonds are so unique and draw folks with an eye for the quirky stone cutters cut some pretty cool shapes out of salt and pepper stones that would be hard to find in traditional white diamonds. This gemstone comes in a variety of shades of blues, greens, purples, and even white - making it a super versatile stone for unique jewelry pieces. Sapphires are also great for jewelry because they’re highly  durable and scratch resistant, perfect for everyday wear. We love working with Montana sapphires because they are some of the most traceable gems in the world! We source our Montana sapphires from several independent miners, as well as from Fair Trade certified suppliers Columbia Gemhouse and Americut Gems. A special variety called the Red Anthill Garnet is historically valued by the Diné (also known as Navajo) tribe of Arizona, and the Diné people continue to collect the stone from the margins around ant hills in the area. The ants encounter the garnets while excavating their underground passages and bring them to the surface, making them easy to collect. Its name originates from Goshen, Massachusetts, where it was first discovered. This white stone is a favorite of ours for white stone engagement rings - it is a super affordable option with fully traceable, ethical sourcing.Though it is a bit less sparkly than other white stones like diamonds, it is still durable enough for everyday wear in rings. Although peridot is treasured in Hawaii as the goddess Pele's tears, almost all the Peridot sold in Hawaii today is from Arizona. Peridot is hard enough for “hard wearing” jewelry like rings, but it should be treated with care to avoid scratches. We source our peridot from Mesa Verde, Arizona via Columbia Gem House. This peridot is Apache-mined from Peridot Mesa, a flat-topped basalt rock hill with steep sides in the San Carlos Reservation.  Read more about peridot here: Stone Spotlight: Peridot, Green Gemstones   Rose Quartz - South Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine Rose quartz is known as the "mothering crystal." For centuries it has been thought to have healing properties for love, self-love, deep inner healing and feelings of peace. It has been used to heal the body and heart after birth, pregnancy loss, post-partum and other times of trauma or self-doubt. Though rose quartz is less durable than a diamond or sapphire, it is still a great option for pendants and earrings. Much of our current inventory of Rose quartz is cut by local artisanal stone cutters after being sourced from the Ripp Mine in Alstead, New Hampshire and the Bumpus Mine in Albany, Maine.  Read more about rose quartz here: Stone Spotlight: Rose Quartz   Amethyst - Montana, South Dakota, Maine, New Hampshire If you’re looking for a symbolic pop of color that is durable enough for everyday wear, Amethyst is a great choice. With stunning hues ranging from lavender to deep purple, Amethyst has adorned jewelry for centuries. Many traditions associate amethyst with peace, and it is believed to have a calming effect on whoever wears it. Amethyst is great for jewelry because it is tough enough for all types of pieces, from rings to earrings. We source our Amethyst from Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. We often use stones mined as part of the Intergalactic Find (also called the Fourth of July find) in the mid 1990's. Because of their complex molecular structure, tourmalines have unusual electrical properties and when heated or compressed; they gain a polarized electrical charge, making them magnetic. Tourmaline is quite hard and resistant to scratches, making it a great gemstone for jewelry pieces. We love sourcing Maine tourmalines from our friends at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. We also source Fair Trade tourmalines from California through Columbia Gem House. This stone is regarded as a stone of optimism and goodwill, and its iridescent quality creates a captivating play of colors for the eye. With a hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, Sunstone is best suited for pendants, earrings, or other pieces that endure less harsh wear compared to rings or bracelets. This stone is associated with tranquility and clarity, often said to radiate calming energy. Aquamarine is a durable stone, perfect for rings and other everyday jewelry. Adding Blue Gems to Your Ring   Iolite - Wyoming  Iolite, known for its shifting hues from violet to blue, is dubbed the "Viking compass stone" for aiding navigation. This gem's optical properties allow it to display different colors from different angles. For jewelry purposes, iolite is only moderately tough, and should be cut and set with care. Adding Blue Gems to Your Ring   Ruby - Wyoming Rubies, prized for their rich red hue, symbolize passion, vitality, and love. They are a variety of corundum, the same mineral as sapphires, and are among the hardest gemstones. Due to significant ethical issues associated with the ruby trade around the world, we are extremely cautious when it comes to sourcing rubies. We will not buy any rubies labeled “mixed origin,” meaning suppliers don’t know exactly where they were mined. They're a type of chalcedony quartz that are great for jewelry due to their hardness, durability, affordability, and availability. We source agates from artisanal stone miners and cutters, as well as in person at the Tucson Gem Show.   Turquoise - Arizona  Turquoise, revered for its vivid blue-green color, carries a history of protection and spiritual significance across cultures. It's a hydrated phosphate mineral found in arid regions. Though this stone offers a super bold pop of color, it is moderately porous with a relatively low toughness score. We source our turquoise from artisanal stone miners and cutters.    Moonstone - Wisconsin With its enchanting play of light known as adularescence, Moonstone is often associated with intuition and feminine energy. This gemstone is a type of feldspar that comes in varying colors, usually soft blues and whites. Moonstone is a less durable stone than others on this list, so it’s best suited for jewelry pieces like necklaces and earrings. We source our moonstone from Columbia Gem House.    Smoky Quartz - Arkansas, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine Smoky Quartz is a transparent variety of quartz that forms naturally due to the presence of irradiation and aluminum impurities. Its earthy tones and symbolic value make smoky quartz a versatile choice for creating jewelry that resonates with a sense of balance and stability. With a decently high rating on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, smoky quartz is durable enough to be worn every day, but does require a bit of care to maintain. We source our smoky quartz from Columbia Gem House, and our founder, Will, has also sourced some smoky quartz from outside of his home in Vermont!   Topaz - Colorado  Most people think of an orange color when they think of topaz, but this gemstone also comes in a variety of other colors like blue, pink, and yellow. Ancient Egyptians believed that topaz was a powerful talisman that could protect them from harm and bring good fortune. Topaz ranks pretty high on the hardness scale, so it is used very commonly in jewelry of all kinds. Alida and Mercy both knew that they wanted to make their rings with us here at W.R. Metalarts, but Mercy didn’t know that Alida would successfully pull off the surprise of a lifetime. This story is one where love meets art - and we are so happy to have been a part of it! From the very beginning, their connection was undeniable, and they soon realized they were meant to be together forever. After getting engaged on New Year's Day, with Mercy proposing using a Claddagh ring, the couple turned their attention to planning their wedding.  While exploring different wedding ring options, they discovered W.R.Metalarts and were drawn to our nature-inspired mokume gane rings. They also felt connected to our commitment to sustainability, knowing that they would feel great about wearing rings that were ethically made.  The planning stage Driven by her love for Mercy and a desire to surprise her, Alida filled out an inquiry form on our website on her own. Together with Alida, our team learned more about what style of rings would work best for the lovebirds. We chatted, asked questions, shared pictures, and reviewed which catalog pieces spoke most to Alida’s heart and intuition.  During the consultation process, Alida told us how important it was to incorporate sentimental elements into their wedding rings. She knew she wanted to use her grandfather's gold wedding band, and a treasured silver earring and necklace set with small diamonds from her grandmother. Alida's idea of repurposing these heirlooms resonated deeply with her, as a way of infusing their rings with the cherished memories of her family. In addition to incorporating family jewelry, Alida knew that Mercy’s perfect wedding ring would need to take into account her active lifestyle. We were happy to design a durable ring for Mercy that would hold up during her kitchen and garden work - without sacrificing the sparkle, of course.  The big reveal Alida’s vision culminated in a tri-metal mokume gane combination of rose gold, yellow gold, and silver, with her grandfather's yellow gold serving as the liner. She chose a solitary stone for Mercy, using a vintage diamond to add a timeless touch.  For her own ring, Alida opted for a simple, textured band made from her heirloom gold. With this ring, she will always carry a piece of her family history with her while she continues on in her own love story Once the rings were ready to go, Alida invited Mercy to join her for an initial “design consultation” here at W.R. Metalarts. Little did Mercy know, her rings were already waiting for her. There are lots of measuring methods out there, but don't be fooled – many of them won't give you the right results. Don't worry, though! We're here to tell you which common tips to avoid, and guide you through some foolproof methods that will help you find your perfect fit. Ring size measuring methods to AVOID  So, let's talk about some at-home methods that seem easy, but don’t yield the best result. They’re commonly suggested, but honestly, they can be pretty inaccurate:  First up, there's the String or Paper Strip Method. You wrap a string or paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and boom - done! Sounds easy, right? Well, the problem is that the tension and thickness of the material can mess with the measurements, giving you the wrong size. Next, we've got Ring Sizing Charts. These charts show a bunch of circles with corresponding sizes. The idea is to slip your existing ring over the circles until you find the best match. But the issue is, the sizes on different charts might not play nice together, and the accuracy depends on having a ring that fits you just right. And lastly, let’s cover Online Ring Sizer Printouts. Some websites offer printable sizers for you to measure your finger. Just hit print, cut, measure away, and you're set! Right? Not quite. Printer settings can throw everything off, like scaling and alignment, messing with your size accuracy. These methods might seem easy, but the inaccuracy of the results will likely make things harder in the long run. With ring shopping is daunting as it is - we highly recommend making sure you get started on the right foot with correct sizing!    How to find your ring size ACCURATELY Though we may have debunked some seemingly simple at-home measuring methods, we’ve got other suggestions that are just as manageable. Use one of these methods to determine your correct ring size:  Visit a jeweler for professional ring sizing. Any local jeweler will have a set of precise ring sizers, which you can try on to determine the perfect fit. This method ensures accuracy and is the most reliable way to find your ring size. Super easy!  If you can’t visit a jeweler in person, just order an accurate ring sizer online. Unlike printable paper versions, plastic ring sizers are standardized and provide much more reliable results. You can even order one of these ring sizers for free right here on our website! Can’t beat that.   Finally - and maybe most obviously - to determine the correct size for your new ring, just use the same size as a ring that already fits. Make sure to take into account which finger you’ll want to wear your new ring on, and use a ring that fits on that same finger. If you’re not sure what size your ring is, you can always ask a jeweler in-person or send your ring to a jeweler (like us!) via mail service for sizing evaluation.  Buying a new piece of jewelry is a special experience that merits thoughtful preparation, and sizing is a crucial step.
