High vs. Low Settings: What They Mean for Your Wedding Band When you're choosing an engagement ring, the setting height might not be the first thing on your mind — but it can make a big difference when it comes time to find a wedding band. Whether you're in the early stages of ring shopping or you already have your dream engagement ring and are now trying to figure out the perfect band to pair with it, understanding high vs. low settings will help you make the right call. What is a high setting? A high setting raises the center stone well above the band, giving it maximum visibility and light exposure. Because the setting sits elevated, there is space underneath the stone where a straight band can nestle flush against the engagement ring without any interference. This means you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to your wedding band — a simple, flat band will sit seamlessly right alongside it. What is a low setting? However, because the profile of the ring is lower and wider, a straight band won't sit flush against the engagement ring — there will be a gap, or the band will press awkwardly against the setting. This is where a contour band comes in. What is a contour band? A contour band (sometimes called a curved or chevron band) is a wedding band specially shaped to follow the curve or silhouette of your engagement ring. Rather than being straight, it has a gentle bend or notch that allows it to nestle perfectly around the setting. If your engagement ring has a low setting — or any setting with a unique shape that a straight band would bump up against — a contour band is the solution to getting that seamless, stacked look. How do I know which band style I need? The simplest way to think about it: if your engagement ring has a high setting, a straight band will sit flush against it with no gaps. If your ring has a low setting, you'll want to look into a contour band so the two rings sit cleanly together. Straight Bands Straight bands, like our Classic Band or The Diamond Pavé Band, are a timeless stacking option. Engagement rings that have an elevated stone setting will allow these straight bands to slip right underneath, so both rings touch without a gap. Contour Bands     Contour bands are curved or angled to follow the silhouette of a solitaire or multi-stone ring, allowing multiple rings to stack closely together. These are the perfect companion to a low-set engagement ring. You may even choose to have more open space between the rings, adding another dimension to your stack. Nesting Bands     Nesting bands are the perfect option when you want the rings to fit very closely to each other. If your rings have a unique profile, such as our Notched or Olive Branch designs, nesting bands will fit into each other like puzzle pieces, leaving little to no gap between the rings. If we’re hand-casting your rings, we can achieve a closer alignment by creating both rings at the same time. Open Bands Open bands have a small gap in the top of the ring shank, which creates space for a stone or stone cluster to sit in between the two ends of the band.
