Details
Anthill Garnets earn their name from the way they’re found: brought to the surface by ants as they carve out their underground homes. Over time, rain washes these tiny, brilliant gems down the sides of the hills, where they collect like scattered drops of red light against the desert floor.
These rare garnets are found only on Navajo lands in the Four Corners region, and their collection is rooted deeply in cultural tradition. Access is limited exclusively to Navajo community members born in the region, making these stones as meaningful as they are rare.
Our sourcing partner, Jaymus of Columbia Gem House’s local network, doesn’t mine these garnets. Instead, he gathers them in the traditional way. By carefully raking the desert and honoring practices passed down through his family. Before he begins, he recites the Holy Prayers taught to him by his grandfather: a greeting prayer, then an introductory prayer. He collects each garnet on his knees, just as his ancestors did, and closes his work with a Thank You prayer.
Today, Jaymus is the last person who still gathers Anthill Garnets in this ancestral manner. Each gem carries not only the natural beauty of the desert, but also the living history and reverence of the people who steward this land.
Garnet was named for its resemblance to a pomegranate seed and has been associated with healing properties for centuries. It has been thought to have calming properties that suppress anger and guide one towards their true path in life.
